Preventing Senior Falls

Many seniors have fallen and injured themselves. When you are a senior, falling damages your body more than it would damage a younger person’s body. Not to mention that the fall requires more care that is expensive. The risk of losing additional independence is also a reality that seniors have to face when they take a fall. The sad part is, many of these falls occur in the senior’s own home while they are doing regular activities. There are factors that make falls more prevalent in seniors as well as injuries to the body are as follows: the diminishing of your hearing, the diminishing of your sight, the diminishing of your coordination, and the diminishing of physical strength.

Age makes the bones of the body increasingly brittle, making the amount of time that is used for your bones to heal themselves progressively slower and slower. There are ways that you can prevent yourself from getting hurt and receiving injuries, or at least decrease your chances.

The first way is for you to check your hearing and vision often. You will be more alert and able to retain your eyesight by doing this longer than you would otherwise be able to do. The second way is to make sure you ask your doctor about the side effects of the medications that you currently take. Some medicines cause your movement to be unsteady, drowsy, or dizzy. You can also talk to your pharmacist about this. A third way is to create a physical exercise plan with the assistance of a physical therapist or doctor. This helps keep your muscles strong and your balance in check. The fourth way is to buy and use safety bars around your toilet and shower. When it comes to stairs, make sure that you use the handrails provided. You want to use a hand held shower head, and put a seat inside the shower. Using non-slip strips or safety mats is a good idea as well. The fifth thing you can do is to wear shoes that are comfortable, and which have rubber soles on them. Have a cane or walker? Use it! The sixth thing that you can do is to put good lighting in your bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. When it is dark in the house, use night lights in any bathrooms and/or hallways. The seventh thing that you can do is to keep the house walkways clean. If you haven’t already done so, fix any broken floors and/or tiles so as to avoid tripping hazards. The eighth way is for you to decide that you are going to not use throw rugs. This goes for tacking the rugs down with non-stick backing or glue. The ninth thing that you can do is to purchase and install an emergency response system to get help quickly. The tenth thing you can do is to always have a cell phone handy. The eleventh thing you can do is to, when walking outdoors or in an unfamiliar location, to concentrate on where and what you are doing and/or going. The final thing that you can do is to clean up wet areas quickly, and to stay clear of any wet areas that you encounter.
